jev-games

Visual lab where Jev plays Super Mario Bros., Kung Fu and Doom through a plugin system, with code owning buttons and timing.

Projectprototype

Overview

Jev Games is a visual lab where Jev plays several games, following on from mario-jev with the same controller style, a zero-shot lab UI, and a plugin split so new games and emulator platforms can be added without rewriting the loop. Bundled titles are Super Mario Bros. on NES using RAM observations, Kung Fu on NES (bring your own ROM) and Doom via ViZDoom (shareware WAD or Freedoom).

Jev makes the decisions while code owns buttons, hold duration and, for Mario, landing interrupts. The lab UI can run, single-step or reset an episode, switch cartridges, list attempts and replay recorded buttons. A scripted baseline lets you check the emulator without spending API calls; the README warns that every Jev decision is a paid request. It uses Python 3.13 with uv and a Bun frontend, and also supports headless play.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceWhich action should the player take now?(inferred)—

How it works

  1. Choose a cartridge and policy (Jev or scripted)
  2. Emulator produces RAM or engine observations
  3. Jev picks an action; code maps it to buttons and hold time
  4. Record attempts for replay

Strengths

  • Plugin architecture for new games
  • Scripted baseline avoids API spend while debugging
  • Step and replay controls

Caveats

  • Some games require user-supplied ROMs
  • Every Jev decision is billed

Getting started

`uv sync`, build the frontend with `bun install && bun run build`, then `uv run jev-games lab` and open http://127.0.0.1:5173.
