roverlab

Browser 3D planetary rover sandbox where a TypeSafe controller chooses the next action from complete candidates, versus a baseline.

Projectbeta

Overview

RoverLab is a browser-based planetary rover sandbox for experimenting with autonomous decisions. You give a rover a mission such as investigating past water or finding unusual minerals, and watch it discover terrain under limited perception, inspect and collect samples, return cargo to base and recharge, while battery and energy use stay visible. A decision timeline shows the exact knowledge, resources, complete candidate actions and selected action at each step, and mission instructions can be edited during an expedition.

A deterministic baseline controller is the default and needs no key. A selectable TypeSafe controller, via a local Bun backend and the official JavaScript SDK, returns Choice probabilities over the candidates, with bounded inference, attempt and latency accounting, cost estimates, and explicit retry or baseline continuation after inference failures. Later work adds a dust storm with detours, a follow camera, saved and replayable expedition records, comparison and tuning, an expanded world and a teaching mode linking map targets to decisions.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceWhich candidate action should the rover take next (move to target, inspect, collect, return, recharge, wait)?(inferred)—

How it works

  1. Build the rover's current knowledge, resources and complete candidate actions
  2. Ask the TypeSafe controller (or baseline) to choose
  3. Execute the action in code and record probability, latency and cost
  4. On inference failure, retry or continue with the baseline

Strengths

  • Every decision inspectable with full candidates and probabilities
  • Baseline comparison and replay without new inference
  • Explicit failure recovery

Caveats

  • Sandbox, not a robotics system
  • No licence stated

Getting started

Install Bun 1.4.2, then bun install and run the dev server; add a TypeSafe key to use the Jev controller.

Frequently asked questions

What does Jev decide in RoverLab?

Which of the complete candidate actions the rover takes next.

Do I need a key?

No, the deterministic baseline runs without one; the TypeSafe controller needs a key.

Can I compare runs?

Yes, expeditions are saved, replayable and comparable.
