Jev × Civilization II
Experimental harness where Jev plays the original Civilization II in a browser, choosing empire, city, research and unit actions.
Overview
Jev x Civilization II is an experimental harness in which TypeSafe Jev plays the original Windows Civilization II, running in DOSBox with Windows 3.1 in a browser, with a Roman-themed spectator dashboard showing live action probabilities. The target is a full win as a Roman leader on a small map at Prince difficulty with five civilisations and standard rules, and the README is explicit that no complete-game victory has been verified yet.
The controller uses only player-observable state, the original game's pixels and ordinary keyboard and mouse input. Named Jev Choice vectors cover empire policy, cities, research, diplomacy, units, exploration and warfare, and displayed values are action probabilities, not probability of victory. The repository contains only the harness; proprietary game binaries stay in ignored local storage. A dedicated Chrome launcher gives parallel long campaigns isolated profiles and servers, and an optional WebAssembly backend with pinned assets runs faster. Architecture plans and a development log are included.
What the decision model decides
| Type | Question | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | Which empire policy, research or diplomacy action should be taken? | — |
| Choice | What should this city build or this unit do? | — |
How it works
- Run the original game in an emulator in the browser
- Read player-observable state from the screen
- Jev chooses actions from named Choice vectors
- Controller issues keyboard and mouse inputs
- Spectator dashboard shows probabilities
Strengths
- Uses only player-observable information
- Live probabilities for every decision
- Supports parallel long campaigns
Caveats
- No verified complete win yet
- Requires obtaining proprietary game files separately
