Chrome extension Magic 8 Ball for pull requests: Jev picks a verdict from nine PR signals and the ball shows a matching classic phrase.

Overview

Magic Jev is a Magic 8 Ball for GitHub pull requests. Open a PR, click the ball, and it answers 'should I approve this?' with one of the 20 classic phrases, chosen not at random but from the PR's real signals in about 200 ms. The extension reads nine signals through the GitHub API: CI status, lines and files changed, whether only docs changed, whether tests were touched, approvals, changes requested, draft status and whether the author is a bot.

A small server asks Jev to pick one of four verdicts: yes (CI passing and docs-only or at most 50 lines), lean yes (51 to 300 lines), unclear (CI pending or 301 to 800 lines) or no (CI failing, a draft, changes requested or over 800 lines). The extension then picks a random phrase from that verdict's five and shows why, plus confetti for a yes. The criteria are plain English, and the same rule is also written as code so Jev can be checked against it. The ball never approves, comments, merges or reads your code. Installation is a downloadable unpacked extension with no account or keys.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceCan this PR be approved on a light read?yes · lean_yes · unclear · no

How it works

  1. Extension reads nine PR signals from the GitHub API
  2. Server asks Jev to choose one of four verdicts
  3. Extension shows a random phrase from that verdict
  4. Reason and latency are displayed
  5. A code version of the rule checks Jev's agreement

Strengths

  • Shows Jev fast enough for an interactive toy
  • Never acts on the PR
  • Rule written in English and code for checking

Caveats

  • A toy, not a review tool
  • Uses only metadata, not code
  • Public PRs by default
