smart-switch

macOS window switcher that predicts which app you want on Cmd+` with a Jev Choice over your ten most recent apps.

ProjectprototypeAGPL-3.0

Overview

SmartSwitch reimagines window switching on macOS. It records every app activation (the last 200), tagged as a Cmd+Tab switch, a SmartSwitch switch or other. When you press Cmd+`, the ten most recently used running apps become options in one Jev Choice question, with your recent switches, how long you stayed in each app, the time of day and your last ten manual Cmd+Tab switches as context. The most probable app is activated.

Any failure or a one-second timeout falls back to the last-used app. The menu bar shows the last decision with the exact request and response, and a developer mode notifies you when the fallback is taken. The core is written in Rust with a C ABI used by a SwiftUI menu bar app, which handles the hotkey, keychain storage of the API key and Accessibility permission setup. Tab switching is planned but not implemented. It is licensed AGPL-3.0.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceWhich of the ten most recent apps does the user want to switch to?—

How it works

  1. Record app activations and switch types
  2. On Cmd+`, build a Choice over the ten most recent apps with history as state
  3. Activate Jev's most probable app
  4. Fall back to the last-used app on failure or after 1 s

Strengths

  • Learns from actual switching behaviour
  • Safe fallback with a 1 s timeout
  • Request and response visible in the menu

Caveats

  • macOS only; requires Accessibility permission
  • Switching history is sent to TypeSafe
  • Tab switching not implemented

Getting started

./build.sh to build, sign and install, then paste a TypeSafe key in Settings and press Cmd+`.
