laya-vs-jev

Chrome T-Rex game where local Laya on MLX and hosted Jev choose moves side by side, with latency charts and crash replays.

ServiceprototypeApache-2.0

Overview

This Laya vs Jev project has two decision models play Chrome's T-Rex game side by side on a shared obstacle course: Laya running locally on Apple Silicon through MLX, and Jev through TypeSafe's hosted API. You watch their choices, response times, survival streaks and slow-motion crash replays, with live latency charts and decision feedback.

The README is careful about what is measured: a deterministic physics planner labels the possible moves and the models choose between them, and safety checks can override unsafe or stale choices, so assisted scores measure the combined system rather than independent model skill; the 'best move' statistic measures agreement with the planner, and an unassisted flag disables the shields. Runs can be recorded and exported to 1080p video. A local-only mode needs no API key. It is built on laya-mlx and licensed Apache-2.0, with tests and a planner benchmark script.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceWhich planner-labelled move should the dinosaur make now (e.g. jump, duck, run)?(inferred)—

How it works

  1. Game state is sent to Laya (local) and Jev (hosted)
  2. Each model chooses among planner-labelled moves
  3. Safety shields may override unsafe or stale choices
  4. Metrics, latency and crashes are recorded
  5. Runs can be exported as video

Strengths

  • Side-by-side view of local versus hosted latency
  • Clear disclosure of planner assistance
  • Local-only mode without a key
  • Recording and export

Caveats

  • Assisted scores do not measure pure model skill
  • Apple Silicon required for Laya
  • Game demo, not a benchmark of general accuracy

Getting started

git clone https://github.com/virajbhartiya/laya-vs-jev.git && cd laya-vs-jev && uv sync --extra demo --extra trex --extra dev, download the model, set TYPESAFE_API_KEY, then uv run --extra trex laya-trex --round-seconds 0 --env-file .env

Frequently asked questions

Do scores show which model is better?

Not directly; with safety shields on, scores reflect the combined system. Use --unassisted to remove them.

Can I play without a key?

Yes, with --players laya for a local-only game.

What hardware do I need?

An Apple Silicon Mac for Laya via MLX.
