jev-yt-time-saver
Chrome extension that asks Jev to score YouTube videos as likely time-wasters and covers them with a dismissible shield.
Overview
YT Time Saver is a Chrome extension built around watching on purpose rather than on impulse. It scans the YouTube home feed, search results, subscriptions and the watch-page sidebar, reads the signals YouTube shows for each card (title, channel, duration) plus your current search intent, and asks Jev to score each video. Cards that look like likely time-wasters get a dimmed shield over them; you still see they exist but must click to reveal, and a revealed video stays revealed for that tab.
A MutationObserver handles lazy-loaded feeds so new cards are checked as you scroll. Settings let you enable or disable shielding, set a waste threshold, set a minimum confidence before it acts, and optionally fetch video descriptions through YouTube's player API for more signal. The TypeSafe key is stored only in extension storage. It installs unpacked via developer mode.
What the decision model decides
| Type | Question | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Score | How likely is this video to be a time-waster given its title, channel, duration and the user's search intent?(inferred) | — |
How it works
- Detect video cards as they load
- Send title, channel, duration and search intent to Jev
- Cover cards above the waste threshold and minimum confidence
- User can reveal any covered video
Strengths
- Nothing hidden permanently
- Adjustable threshold and confidence
- Key stays in the browser
Caveats
- Uses your own TypeSafe key and quota
- Judgments from titles and thumbnails can be wrong
