ChessWithJev

NiceGUI desktop chess app for evaluating Jev's move choices against Stockfish, random players or itself, with PGN export.

Projectprototype

Overview

ChessWithJev is a hobby desktop chess application built with NiceGUI to review how good Jev is at chess decisions. You can set Jev, a human, Stockfish, random moves or another Jev as either player, compare against Stockfish analysis and export finished games as PGN.

When Jev plays, a predictions tab shows its chosen move and the highest-rated legal alternatives. It requires Python 3.12+ and Stockfish, with a setup script for macOS (Homebrew) and Debian/Ubuntu Linux (untested by the author). The author notes issues may not get fast responses. On Linux the setup script installs Stockfish, venv support and Qt libraries through apt. Jev is configured with JEV_API_KEY in the environment or a .env file and is called only when selected as a player.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceWhich legal move should be played?legal moves

How it works

  1. Choose players for White and Black
  2. On Jev's turn, send the position and legal moves
  3. Show the chosen move and top alternatives
  4. Compare with Stockfish analysis and export PGN

Strengths

  • Direct comparison with Stockfish
  • Shows alternatives, not just the pick

Caveats

  • Hobby project
  • Linux untested
