typesafe-adblock

Fun Chrome extension that asks Jev whether each candidate DOM element is a paid ad and removes those above a threshold.

Browser extensionprototypeMIT

Overview

TypeSafe Fun AdBlocker is a Manifest V3 Chrome extension that turns ad blocking into per-element yes/no questions. Plain code finds ad-shaped candidates (iframes, ad-like class names, sponsored labels, ad-network links), describes each compactly as JSON with numbers converted to words because Jev is weak on numbers, and sends one batched request with one noul question per candidate. Elements with P(ad) at or above 0.70 are outlined, faded and removed.

The author is explicit that it is a side project, not a real ad blocker: it costs API tokens per page, misses ads, sometimes removes non-ads and does nothing about tracking, malware or video ads; use uBlock Origin for that. It is bring-your-own-key with no backend, and a MutationObserver catches lazy-loaded ads, with batches debounced and capped at 30 candidates.

What the decision model decides

How it works

  1. Code finds and collapses ad-shaped DOM candidates.
  2. Each is described as compact JSON.
  3. One batched request asks a noul per candidate.
  4. Elements with P(ad) at least 0.70 are animated out and removed.

Strengths

  • Clear split: code finds candidates, Jev judges, code acts.
  • No backend; key stays in the browser and goes only to TypeSafe.
  • Batched requests limit per-page calls.

Caveats

  • Not a real ad blocker; misses ads and removes some non-ads.
  • Costs API tokens per page.
  • No protection against tracking, malware or video ads.
