Tab Sorter
Chrome extension that sorts every tab into named groups with one parallel Jev Choice per tab, or via an LLM that invents group names.
Overview
Tab Sorter is a Chrome Manifest V3 extension that groups all tabs in the current window into named, colored tab groups with one click. Its default rules engine uses Jev: each tab gets one Choice question against user-editable group rules, written as label and description lines, and the whole window is classified in one parallel call. Tabs that fit no group fall into a fixed fallback bucket, and manually created groups are never touched.
An optional LLM engine sends tab titles and hosts to any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, which invents its own group names and returns strict JSON. The README contrasts the two: the Jev engine takes about a second for the whole window with no output tokens and no parsing failures, while the LLM engine takes 10 to 30 seconds and suits exploring how browsing clusters. Ungrouping restores the original tab order. It is aimed at people who keep many tabs open.
What the decision model decides
| Type | Question | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | Which user-defined group does this tab belong to? | user-defined group labels · fallback bucket |
How it works
- User clicks the toolbar icon.
- Each tab's title and host become state for a Choice question.
- Jev answers all tabs in one parallel call.
- Tabs are moved into colored groups; unmatched tabs go to the fallback group.
Strengths
- About one second for a whole window, per the README.
- Typed answers avoid JSON parsing failures.
- Manual groups are preserved and tab order is restored on ungroup.
Caveats
- Requires a TypeSafe key for the Jev engine.
- Group rules must be defined by the user.

How curated lists describe it
Browser tooling: Chrome MV3 extension that groups every tab in the window into named, colored Chrome tab groups from one parallel Jev call — one `Choice` question per tab against user-editable group criteria — with unclassified tabs falling to a fixed fallback bucket, manual groups untouched, and the pre-grouping tab order restored on ungroup; an optional LLM engine with self-invented group names is included for comparison runs.

Frequently asked questions
What does Jev decide?
Which of your predefined groups each open tab belongs to, with a fallback for tabs that fit none.
How is it different from the LLM engine?
Jev uses your fixed groups and answers in about a second; the LLM invents group names and takes longer.
Does it change groups I made myself?
No, manual groups are left untouched.
