jev-doom

Local dashboard to watch Jev play Freedoom via ViZDoom, showing choices, probabilities, latency and cost with spending bounds.

ServiceprototypeMIT

Overview

Jev Doom lets you watch Jev make structured decisions in a real Freedoom game. A local dashboard shows the game frame, the choices Jev made with probabilities, navigation, latency and cost, and lets you change Jev's standing orders while it plays. It is an independent experiment, not an official TypeSafe, Vercel or Doom product.

Setup creates an isolated Python environment, installs locked Node dependencies and downloads Freedoom 0.13.0, so no proprietary assets are needed. It runs on macOS or Linux with Python 3.10 to 3.13 and Node 22+. Jev can be reached directly via TypeSafe (jev-latest on /v1/systemone) or through Vercel AI Gateway's experimental evaluation API; keys stay server-side, a provider check makes one billed request, and the list summary mentions bounded spending. A free preview loads a real engine frame without a key.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
ChoiceWhich action should the player take next in the current game state?(inferred)—

How it works

  1. Run setup and start the dashboard
  2. Choose TypeSafe or Vercel Gateway and check the provider
  3. Each step, send structured game state and a Choice to Jev
  4. Execute the action in ViZDoom and display probabilities, latency and cost

Strengths

  • Inspectable decisions with live cost tracking
  • Two provider routes
  • Ships only free Freedoom assets

Caveats

  • Windows only via WSL2 and not validated
  • Live play costs API credits

Getting started

`git clone https://github.com/olivier-motium/jev-doom.git && cd jev-doom && ./setup.sh && ./run.sh`, then open http://127.0.0.1:8767.

Frequently asked questions

What does Jev decide?

The player's next action in the game, from structured state.

Can I try it without a key?

A free preview shows a real engine frame; playing with Jev requires a key.

Do I need Doom game files?

No, setup downloads the free Freedoom 0.13.0.
