ask-jev
Neo-brutalist Chinese web app styled after Ask Jeeves that gives direct verdicts on everyday dilemmas like whether to buy or what to eat.
Overview
Ask Jev (问问Jev) is a mobile-first web app aimed at young people in mainland China, styled as a retro neo-brutalist butler inspired by 1990s Ask Jeeves. You type an everyday dilemma, such as whether to buy something, spend money or go somewhere, or what to eat for lunch, and get a direct verdict card you can copy and share, with confetti when you accept it.
It is a Next.js 15 app with a serverless route that proxies requests to a configured TypeSafe Jev endpoint with the key kept server-side. If the endpoint and key are not configured, it switches to a built-in local mock engine, so verdicts may be simulated rather than from Jev. The README's example endpoint path does not match TypeSafe's documented /v1/systemone API. Much of the README covers mobile UX details like thumb-zone layout and Chinese IME handling.
What the decision model decides
| Type | Question | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | Should I do it (buy / spend / go), or which option should I pick?(inferred) | yes · no · options given |
How it works
- User enters a dilemma
- Server route forwards it to the configured Jev endpoint
- Without config, a local mock engine answers
- A verdict card is shown and can be shared
Strengths
- Careful mobile UX
- Key kept server-side
- Zero-dependency index.html preview
Caveats
- Falls back silently to a mock engine when unconfigured
- Endpoint in README differs from TypeSafe's documented API
- No licence stated
