Jev-Mail

Gmail classifier running on Google Apps Script where Jev decides action-needed, importance and category for each thread.

Projectbeta

Overview

Jev-Mail is a CLI-installed Gmail classifier whose worker runs on the user's own Google Apps Script project, so it keeps working when the user's computer is off. The CLI handles installation, configuration, preview and operations, and uploads a versioned worker that polls the inbox on a time trigger.

For each inbox thread, the worker sends sender, recipient, subject, a bounded body snippet and limited context to TypeSafe Jev, and asks three typed questions: whether the message requires action, whether an action item deserves a star, and which configured bucket fits a non-action message. It validates probabilities before changing anything in Gmail. Ambiguous action probabilities, low category confidence, unknown categories or changed threads stay in the inbox for review. Default onboarding is label-only, and archiving is opt-in. A packaged setup skill helps coding agents guide installation.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
Yes / norequires_action: does the recipient need to reply, decide, approve or perform a task?yes · no
Yes / nois_important: does this action item deserve a star?yes · no
Choicebucket: which configured category best describes this non-action message?—

How it works

  1. Install with the CLI and preview classifications
  2. Apps Script worker polls Gmail on a time trigger
  3. Jev answers three typed questions per thread
  4. Worker validates probabilities and applies labels, stars or archive
  5. Ambiguous or low-confidence threads stay in the inbox for review

Strengths

  • Runs 24/7 without a local daemon
  • Label-only default and preview make first runs safe
  • Low-confidence results never trigger archive
  • Uses the user's own Google Cloud project and OAuth client

Caveats

  • Setup needs a Google Cloud project, OAuth client and a manual Apps Script editor approval
  • The README notes classification is probabilistic and should be evaluated on your own mail
  • Requires a TypeSafe API key

Getting started

Use the packaged jev-mail-setup skill or the onboarding guide; requires Node.js 22+, a TypeSafe API key and a Google Cloud project with the Apps Script and Gmail APIs enabled.

Frequently asked questions

What does Jev decide for each email?

Whether it requires action, whether it is important enough to star, and which category it belongs to if no action is needed.

Does my computer need to stay on?

No. The worker runs on Google Apps Script time triggers in your own account.

Will it archive mail automatically?

Only if you enable archiving; the default mode only labels, and uncertain threads always stay in the inbox.
