jeq

Pipe-friendly CLI that lets shell scripts and agents ask Jev typed questions and gate on the answers with exit codes.

ProjectbetaMIT

Overview

jeq brings Jev into Unix pipelines. Scripts and agents can ask typed questions from the terminal without client boilerplate: commands such as ask, map, rate, reduce, rank and gate work over NDJSON streams, attach answers to each record under a _jeq key, and turn probabilities into exit codes. In the README example, map asks whether each record is urgent and gate passes at 0.8 or above, rejects at 0.2 or below with exit 10, and returns exit 11 when uncertain.

It is designed to be agent-friendly: jeq --help, per-command help and jeq examples explain usage so no special skill is needed. Installation is via a verifying Linux installer script, checksummed release archives on macOS, Homebrew, or a pinned Nix flake. Guides cover the Jev mental model, composition, reducing bounded collections and providers. It is MIT licensed and at v0.1.0.

What the decision model decides

TypeQuestionAnswers
Yes / noIs this urgent?yes · no
OtherDoes this value pass, reject or remain uncertain under the gate thresholds?pass · reject · uncertain

How it works

  1. Stream records as NDJSON into jeq map with a question
  2. Jev answers per record; results attached to each line
  3. jeq gate compares a JSON pointer value to pass/reject thresholds
  4. Exit 0 pass, 10 reject, 11 uncertain for the shell to act on

Strengths

  • Three-way gate makes uncertainty explicit
  • Composable with standard Unix tools
  • Self-documenting for agents
  • Verifiable installers and pinned Nix builds

Caveats

  • Early release (v0.1.0)
  • Sends input to TypeSafe; requires a key

Getting started

`nix run github:cristianoliveira/jeq/v0.1.0 -- version`, or run the Linux install script, then set TYPESAFE_API_KEY.

Frequently asked questions

What does jeq do?

Lets shell pipelines ask Jev typed questions and gate on the answers with exit codes.

How is uncertainty handled?

gate has separate pass and reject thresholds and exits 11 when a value falls between them.

Do agents need a special skill?

No, jeq --help and jeq examples are enough for an agent to learn it.
