LetJevDecide

Web app for yes/no life decisions: ask Jev for a probability of yes, flip a fair coin, or both, inspired by a coin-toss study.

Overview

Let Jev Decide is a small website for people stuck on a yes-or-no decision. You type the question, optionally add details, and either ask Jev, flip a fair coin made in the browser with cryptographic randomness, or do both and see whether they agree. Jev returns yes or no, the probability of yes and how big a decision it thinks this is. The coin supports one flip or best of three.

The idea comes from Steven Levitt's field experiment in which people let a coin decide major life choices; those who got heads were about 25 points more likely to make the change, and for important decisions, making the change was associated with greater happiness six months later, though Levitt called the results merely suggestive. The site adds Jev as a second decider whose answer depends on what you tell it. One request asks Jev four questions in parallel through a relay. There is no sign-up or install, and the site states it is for fun, not professional advice.

How it works

  1. User types a yes/no decision and optional details
  2. Relay sends four questions to Jev in one request
  3. Site shows yes or no, probability and decision size
  4. Optionally flip a fair coin and compare

Strengths

  • No sign-up or install
  • Grounded in a published study
  • Shows probability rather than a bare verdict

Caveats

  • For fun, not professional advice
  • Jev's answer depends on how the question is phrased
  • Requires the hosted relay
