jev-spring-boot-starter

Spring Boot 4 starter that injects a JevClient for asking Noul, Choice and Score questions from Spring MVC apps.

Libraryprototype

Overview

Jev Spring Boot Starter brings TypeSafe Jev into Spring MVC applications. Add one dependency, set TYPESAFE_API_KEY, and inject a JevClient. Questions are built with factory methods: Question.noul for yes/no probability, Question.choice for picking a named option with probabilities and confidence, and Question.score for an ordered rubric. Several questions can be sent in one evaluate call and read back by name.

It targets Java developers on Spring Boot 4.0+ and Java 17+ who want typed decisions such as ticket routing, urgency and severity alongside existing services. The starter uses Spring's RestClient and Jackson 3, activates automatically in servlet apps without annotations, backs off when you provide your own client, makes no HTTP calls at startup, and fails fast with an actionable error if the key is missing. It is an independent community project; version 0.1.0-SNAPSHOT is built locally and not on Maven Central.

How it works

  1. Add the starter dependency and set TYPESAFE_API_KEY
  2. Inject JevClient into a service
  3. Call evaluate with state text and a map of named questions
  4. Read typed results (probability, choice, confidence, score) and branch in code

Strengths

  • Auto-configuration with no annotations; backs off for a custom client
  • Three question types in one request
  • No HTTP calls at startup; clear error on missing key

Caveats

  • Snapshot version, not published to Maven Central
  • Independent community project
  • Requires Spring Boot 4 MVC (servlet) apps

Getting started

./mvnw clean install, then add dev.danvega:jev-spring-boot-starter:0.1.0-SNAPSHOT and export TYPESAFE_API_KEY.
