jev-sheets
Google Sheets custom functions JEV_IF, JEV_PROB, JEV_CHOICE and JEV_SCORE that classify, tag and score cells with Jev.
Overview
Jev for Google Sheets adds custom formulas that ask plain-language questions about text in cells. JEV_IF returns TRUE or FALSE against a threshold, JEV_PROB returns the probability of yes, JEV_CHOICE picks one of 2 to 255 options or returns UNSURE below a minimum confidence, and JEV_SCORE places text on a 2 to 10 level scale, possibly between levels, or returns UNSURE. Options and levels can be a comma-separated string or a cell range.
Formulas can fill a whole column, or judge each row across several columns as one item. Requests run in parallel batches with retry on rate limits, identical questions on identical text are cached for 6 hours so recalculation does not re-bill, and errors show in cells as #JEV messages. Limits are 1,000 cells per formula because Sheets gives custom functions 30 seconds. You need your own TypeSafe API key. Install options are a Workspace Marketplace listing (pending review), pasting release files into Apps Script, or building from source.
What the decision model decides
| Type | Question | Answers |
|---|---|---|
| Yes / no | User yes/no question per cell, e.g. Is this a complaint? | yes · no |
| Choice | Which of the given options fits this text? | — |
| Score | Where does this text fall on the given scale? | — |
How it works
- Install the Apps Script files in a sheet
- Add your TypeSafe API key
- Write a JEV_ formula over a cell or range
- Jev answers each cell in batches
- Formula applies the threshold or returns UNSURE
Strengths
- No code needed for spreadsheet users
- UNSURE instead of forced guesses
- Caching avoids re-billing on recalculation
- Works on whole columns or multi-column rows
Caveats
- 1,000 cells per formula limit
- Marketplace listing still pending
- Needs your own API key
Getting started
Download jev.js, functions.js, Sidebar.html and appsscript.json from the latest release, paste them into the sheet's Apps Script project, and add your keyAt a glance

Use cases and integrations
How curated lists describe it
Google Sheets custom functions (`JEV_IF`, `JEV_PROB`, `JEV_CHOICE`, `JEV_SCORE`) where Jev answers a Noul, Choice, or Score question per cell; the sheet formula applies the threshold or minimum confidence and returns `UNSURE` below it.

Frequently asked questions
What does Jev decide?
A yes/no, choice or scale answer for each cell or row you point a formula at.
What happens when Jev is unsure?
JEV_CHOICE and JEV_SCORE return UNSURE below your minimum confidence.
